maintenance tips
Cleaning the Exterior
Keep the exterior of your Mitsubishi looking clean and new by ensuring the following:
- If the exterior of your vehicle comes into contact with saltwater, anti-freeze, soot or dust, iron powder, bird droppings or any corrosive chemical substances, be sure to wash it immediately.
- After washing your vehicle, make sure all traces of soap or detergent are removed, and wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
- After washing, also carefully clean the joints and flanges of the doors and engine hood where dirt is likely to hide from view.
- If you live in a coastal area, it’s particularly important to wash your car regularly. Wind-born spray from the sea can distribute salt for a distance of up to 20 kilometres from the shore.
Cleaning the Interior
A few handy tips for cleaning the interior of your Mitsubishi:
- Clean plastic, vinyl, leather, fabric and flocked parts with a soft cloth soaked in lukewarm water and a small amount of neutral detergent.
- Don't use cleaners, conditioners or protectants that contain silicone or wax. These products may cause annoying reflections that obscure your vision.
- Clean the carpet with a vacuum cleaner and remove any stains with carpet cleaner.
- Oil and grease can be removed from carpets by lightly dabbing with a clean, colourfast cloth and stain remover.
Cleaning the Underside
For 4WD vehicles such as the Pajero, Outlander and Triton, it’s important to keep the underside clean – particularly if you drive off-road. This will remove corrosive dirt, dust and salt water.
When washing the underside:
- Be sure to wear a pair of rubber gloves and exercise caution.
- Be careful not to spray water onto any electrical components in the engine compartment.
Cold Weather Care
As the salt and other chemicals spread on the roads in some areas in winter can have a harmful effect on your vehicle, you should clean it as often as possible to prevent corrosion and lasting damage.
Also:
- If you live in a particularly cold area, be sure to wipe off all water from the rubber parts around the doors to prevent the doors from freezing.
- It's also recommended you book in for a Mitsubishi Preventative Service before and after the winter months - to ensure your Mitsubishi remains in optimal condition.
Paintwork - Damaged Paint
Often, your paintwork may be damaged due to flying stones or corrosion. If this is the case:
- Small cracks and scratches can be touched up with Mitsubishi touch-up paint to prevent corrosion - and to keep your vehicle looking new.
- The paint code number for your vehicle can be found on the vehicle information code plate in the engine compartment.
Paintwork - Polishing
When it comes to polishing your paintwork:
- Only polish your vehicle if the paintwork has become stained or lost its luster.
- Matt-finish parts and plastic bumpers mustn’t be polished as this may stain them or damage their finish.
Paintwork - Waxing
Applying wax to your vehicle can help prevent the build up of dust and road chemicals on your paintwork. When doing so, be mindful that:
- You should apply a wax solution after washing your vehicle, at least once every three months.
- You shouldn't wax your vehicle in direct sunlight and should only apply wax after the surfaces have cooled.
alternate fuels
LPG and your mitsubishi
Several of our Mitsubishi vehicles are LPG compatible, meaning you are able to convert them to a 'dual-fuel' system.
To enable reliable operation and ensure the durability of your vehicle, the LPG conversion must be performed in accordance with certain criteria.
Please ask us to confirm whether your vehicle's engine contains the internal components that make it suitable to operate on LPG.

Ethanol and your Mitsubishi
Fuel ethanol is a high-octane, water free alcohol produced from the fermentation of sugar or converted starch. It is traditionally used as a blending ingredient at low concentrations in petroleum (gasoline) or as a raw material to produce high-octane fuel-ether additives. It is made mainly from grains or other renewable agricultural and agro-forestry feed stocks.
Can I use ethanol-blended petroleum in my Mitsubishi vehicle?
A mixture of 10% ethanol and 90% unleaded petrol can be used in your vehicle, provided the octane rating is at least as high as that recommended for unleaded petrol.
You should be aware, however, that ethanol has a lower energy content than straight petrol and this generally means an increase in fuel consumption.
My Mitsubishi vehicle has a carburettor fuel system. Can I use ethanol-blended petroleum?
If your vehicle has a carburettor fuel system built before 1991, we don't recommend you use ethanol-blended petroleum. Your vehicle may experience hot fuel handling concerns and may experience a lower level of durability in some fuel system components.
Is it necessary to make changes to my Mitsubishi vehicle in order to use ethanol-blended fuels?
Vehicles built since 1986, with the exception of carburettor models, are fully compatible with up to 10% ethanol in the mixture.
If your car was built prior to 1986, or you are unsure of the age of your vehicle, please call our customer help centre before putting any fuel other than that recommended in your Owner's Handbook into your vehicle.
Why is ethanol blended with petroleum?
There are a variety of reasons ethanol is blended with petrol.
Ethanol produced in Australia is not currently subject to fuel excise and therefore ethanol-blended fuel made from Australian ethanol is cheaper. Ethanol is used as an octane enhancer. Fuel octane is described as RON (Research Octane Number). Blended correctly, ethanol can increase the RON of petrol. Nonetheless, use of fuel with RON higher than that recommended by the manufacturer generally does not improve vehicle performance.
Ethanol is a renewable energy source - and as such, helps us achieve the bio-fuel use targets set by the Government in order to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
Ethanol production can support and promote local employment opportunities in rural areas where production feed stocks such as sugar cane, wheat, and sorghum are available.
What are the disadvantages to using ethanol blended petroleum in my vehicle?
Poor quality petrol and / or higher ethanol blends can cause problems such as hard starting, stalling, engine noise and hesitation. If you experience these problems, try another brand and/or grade of petrol.
Is ethanol-blended petroleum good for fuel economy?
Ethanol has a lower energy content that petrol, therefore fuel consumption will generally increase when using fuel blended with ethanol. At a 10% ethanol content, it is estimated that fuel consumption will increase in the order of 3%, but actual degradation will be influenced by specific engine technology.
Will ethanol-blended petroleum enhance the performance of my vehicle?
Using an ethanol-blended petroleum will not enhance the performance of your Mitsubishi vehicle.
What is the effect of using ethanol blends on the warranty of my vehicle?
Your Mitsubishi Diamond Advantage warranty approves the use of up to a 10% blend. Anything above that may cause engine and fuel system damage.
Please be aware that the Mitsubishi Diamond Advantage Warranty will not apply in the case of any failure or operational condition attributed to the use of incorrect, contaminated or poor quality fuel in your vehicle. Vehicles with carburettor fuel systems built before 1991 may experience hot fuel handling concerns and may experience a lower level of durability in some fuel system components.
Bio-Diesel and your Mitsubishi
Bio-diesel is a non-fossil fuel derived from renewable feed-stocks such as canola oil.
Diesel fuel mixed with bio-diesel in varying blends is sold in some areas of Australia. These blends are generally marketed as bio-diesel blends according to the amount of bio-diesel used. These include:
- B5 (95% diesel blended with 5% bio-diesel).
- B100 (100% bio-diesel).
Can I use a Bio-diesel blend in my Mitsubishi Vehicle?
All Mitsubishi diesel-powered vehicles can be used with diesel fuel blended bio-diesel provided it meets the requirements detailed below:
1. Amount of bio-diesel must be below 5% volume concentration (i.e. B5 or less).
2. Quality of bio-diesel must conform to the European Standard EN14214.
It is important that prior to using a bio-diesel blend in your vehicle that you ensure it satisfies the above requirements. It should also be noted that bio-diesel has a solvent effect that may release deposits which accumulate on fuel system components resulting in filter and/or injection pump clogging. Failures resulting from the use of any incorrect, contaminated or poor quality fuels are not warrantable defects and therefore the cost of repair will not be covered by your Mitsubishi Diamond Advantage Warranty.
